Shouldercap tattoo in Samoan Maori patterns

Hi,

I have been quite busy the last few months with a lot of different projects, with little time to write posts on my blog.
But to show you some new projects I've been working on; here's a new tattoo for my shoulder galleries. It's a mixed design with Maori elements and Samoan pattern. The images below show the design process in different steps. First I make a basic outline for the shoulder as a template. Then I use my pencil to sketch some flowing koru shapes. Normally I do the whole piece with pencil first and start tracing it when I'm finished.
Today I was a bit impatient, and decided to trace parts of the tribal shapes. You see some Polynesian turtle patterns and Samoan spearheads and stylized fish.

Pencil sketch of a Mauri-style shoulder tatou

Hi,

I get a lot of requests for custom tattoo designs, unfortunately it's impossible to do them all, but here's a nice tatoo project I'm working on at the moment.

My customer asked me to do a tattoo sketch for the shoulder and up to the back/neck. He wanted to see some original eagle designs with claws and wings in a tribal style. The big central curve at consists of two tribal claws of the eagle and at the bottom of the tattoo I made some realistic feathers that would flow onto his biceps and upper arm.

Here's the first pencil sketch I did:

The feathers needed some adjustments to run on the biceps correctly. I also made them more abstract to go better with the overall design:

I'm waiting for my customers response, so I can finish the pencil drawing and start on the final high quality piece.

Shoulder tattoo design in Maori style

Hi,

Recently I created two new tattoo designs for my webshop. The first tattoo is a Kirituhi Maori style shoulder design. All my tattoos are hand-drawn on A3 paper with a B2 pencil. First I sketch the basic shape of the shoulder and upper arm and then add some koru (fern) curves that flow nicely through the design. Once I'm satisfied with the overall look, I start filling in the patterns between the korus with triangles, lines, spearheads and other repetitive shapes. Samoan Maori shoulder tattoo design

Hi,



Here's the 3rd design of my latest sketches in a Samoan inspired tattoo set. This design has some influences from the Maori style, but is mainly filled with Samoan patterns.



I started with a pencil and roughly sketched the outer lines, then traced some tribal patterns:













































For these symmetrical Samoan designs it's always a bit of a surprise how the final design will look. I only draw half the design and then mirror it in Photoshop. This seems easy, but it quity tricky to design the patterns in such a way that it doesn't have an obvious vertical line in the center.

Samoan tattoo for the shoulder

I have been quite busy for the last few weeks, but I wanted to show you some sketches and tattoo pieces that I did. It's another Samaon/Maori inspired shoulder sleeve I did for my galleries.



As you can read in my previous post, I'm working on a new series of Samoan inspired tattoos for the shoulder, with some influences from the Maori style.

This design is roughly based/inspired by the Sonny Bill Williams tattoo.

It has really detailed tribal elements and covers the upperarm from shoulder to elbow. It wraps around to the biceps and back side of the arm.

Shoulder blade tattoo maori samoan style

Hi,

It has been a while, but I just finished a nice tattoo piece. It's a design for the shoulderblade and back.
My customer wanted to cover quite some skin, with nice Maori Kirituhi shapes and some Samoan patterns.

First I made a template from the measurements I received, and started sketching:

I really enjoy to make the first basic koru shapes, this gives the tattoo a nice flow and "cuts" the large template into smaller pieces that can be filled with other intricate patterns, like triangles, spearheads and repetitive lines.


Once the basic layout is set, I move on to the next fase.



My client asked for some Samoan patterns, which are mainly formed by even lines filled with very detailed shapes (upper left side of the tatoo):




















In the centre of the pencil sketch I drew a row of arrowheads and triangles, but I removed it later as you can see in the completed sketch:

The final high resolution image was traced with a black felt-tip marker and scanned.

After optimizing it and creating a linedrawing I sent it to my customer.

Polynesian eye tattoo with coconut leaves

Hi,

I've been working on a new custom design project in the first week of January.
My client wanted a quarter sleeve tattoo, covering the shoulder and half the upper arm, in a Polynesian style.
I had to incorporate some different tribal elements, like the Polynesian eye, coconut leaves and sharp triangles, as a symbol for shark teeth. He also wanted a turtle shell shape added to the tatoo

In the first sketch you can see that I started in the center with the Eye, surrounded by triangular shapes, which looks a little like a sun.
Then I drew some coconut leaves below it and made it flow with the circle above it.




















In the final sketch I made a symmetrical polynesian mask in the lower center and a repetitive border ath both sides.

After tracing it, scanning and optimizing it in Photoshop, the high resolution tattoo looks like this:

Polynesian lizard shoulder tattoo

Hi,

Here's the third polynesian design I've been working on in the last few days.
It has a nice symmetry and contains a lizard in the center and a mask at the top.

Here's a sketch in an early stage:

First I create the main contours of the tattoo by drawing two circles for the shoulder part and adding a rectangular shape at the bottom.
Then I draw other main lines like the diagonal ones and horizontal guide lines.

I really like the repetitive patterns and typical "polynesian" shapes and the eyes at the top of the design.

It took me quite some time to get the image right, most of the time I draw, erase, redraw etc.
So before I get to the final stage of tracing the image, I have nearly spent half my time tweaking and adjusting the image :)

Here's the final shoulder design, the top is symmetrical and the lower part of the tattoo has wave patterns, triangles, arrowheads and turtle symbols

Polynesian shoulder tattoo designs

Hi!

I've been working on a few new shoulder tattoos for my web collection.
The designs are inspired by the Polynesian tribal style, like the Dwayne Johnson tattoo and have some nice detailed patterns.

I started with a circle which covers the shoulderball and a wider rectangle just below.
Then I drew som spearheads and other tribal shapes, like turtle patterns.


I already have a few pieces like these ones in my gallery (shoulder 143, 144 and 145) and they are quite popular, so I decided to add similar designs, but only a bit wider, so it wraps around the upper arm.

The tattoos will cover the shoulder and half the upper arm.
