Maori fern tattoo with koru swirls

Hi,

A few months ago I created a Maori fern tattoo design for a customer from New-Zealand, also named Aotearoa. The koru is the spiral shape of  a silver fern frond and it is a symbol of growth, strenght and peace. This symbol is used in a lot of Maori art, carving and tattoos.

My Kiwi customer from the Pacific Ocean asked me to design a tattoo to cover the full side of his body, from armpit to just above the hip. First I created a sketch with pencil for the rough outline of the fern. Then I added some repetitive leaves and koru shapes on the bottom. To add some more depth and 3d to the fern and arrow shapes, I added shadings to the leaves. The high resolution tattoo is optimized and the linedrawing or stencil is created for the customer. This linedrawing is used to transfer the outlines of this koru tatoo to the body.

Yesterday I received this photo of the final tattoo on the side of the customers body. It looks great!

If you are interested in a custom maori inspired tattoo or a silver fern design, please let me know and maybe I can help you out with a unique piece.

Silver fern storm3d style tattoo

Hi there,

Another nice project today, a client asked me to draw a New Zealand/Maori silver fern in my own "storm3d" style.

The tattoo would be placed just below his arm to just above the hip, around 30 cm in height, quite a large tatoo.

First I made a sketch:

You can see a row of spearheads and some abstract leaves in a repetitive rythm.
I added a curve to the fern so it would flow nicely on the clients body.
The first sketch was approved, so I could trace the design with a marker, scan it and add some nice shadings to the leaves and arrowheads.
The high quality picture looks like this:

I'm working on a new design that will be for sale on this blog, a Maori inspired design with a touch of Samoan elements.
Tomorrow I will add some pictures and maybe I have finished it by that time.

Just check back soon!

custom maori / kirituhi tattoo design by tatoo designer Mark Storm

Hey!

I'm designing a large shoulder tattoo in Maori / Kirituhi style and would like to show you the pencil sketch I have so far.

It consists of a few large koru / fern , the national symbol of New-Zealand and the Kiwi people.

Just let me know what you think.

Finished tattoo design for the Shoulder

Hi There,

Here's the finished shoulder tattoo. Scanned and optimized.
I made some small changes in the upper shoulder, so the fill is a bit more interesting. The repeating shapes on the left side of the shoulder represent arrowheads and the maori curly shapes are called Koru or Fern.

A little history for those who want to know more about the meaning of Koru:
The koru is the Maori name given to the newborn, unfurling fern frond and symbolises new life, growth, strength and peace.
The koru is an iconic symbol of New-Zealand.
It is an integral symbol in Maori carving and tattoos.

Regards, Mark

How to design a maori shoulder tattoo: Step two

When the first rough outline of the shoulder tattoo is set, I try to make some nice flowing curls and koru shapes.
The koru fern is a representation of peace and tranquility along with a strong sense of regrowth or new beginnings.

I like to combine different tribal tattoo elements, like triangles and Polynesian style signs and tattoo shapes.

Here's the picture of the second step:
