Tattoo artist out now

Here is my painting on the front cover of TATTOO ARTISTS 2010, the first issue of the yearbook realized by Tattoo Life magazine......it's for free with the last issue of tattoo life..... go and buy it!!

I also have some superfancy prints of it!
They are 342 x 438 mm big, Glicee' print on Somerset Velvet 255 gsm paper...the print is amazing and fades flawlessly into the paper like it was actually painted on it. I'm very pleased with them! For once! it's so hard to have good prints and it's such a shame considering the time i spend to paint all the details and that!!
The prints are 50£ each and the inks used are archival quality, so they won't fade or lose detail.

Bone tribal wings

Bone-like bio whatever tribal wings tattoo design. Yep. (I love my descriptions ... not).
bone tribal wings, shaded.
tribal wings, black.

Actualy, I was about to post some very colorful stuff, but given I saw halloween themed things everywhere on the net, I opted for a darker design. The vivid one will be for next sunday :p
And I think I found a way to smooth a bit the grain of the pencil without making it look too blurry, happy me.

On a side note, I'm fighting with Blogspot's new themes right now, to update to one of their new template but to keep the same look (except it's a bit wider). I hope I didn't break anything.

Maori Samoan tattoo design for the shoulder

Hi,

As mentioned yesterday, I worked on a new flash design that you can order on this blog. I just finished it today and it's a combination of a Maori inspired tribal with some Samoan elements/shapes added to it.
On a rainy afternoon (one of the many in Holland ;)) I just started sketching when watching television, so not really paying attention to what I was drawing, just doodling around.
To my surprise it really just came out of my hands.

Here's the sketch I'm talking about:

quick tattoo sketch design maori samoan styleThis was a good quick tattoo sketch to start a final design from. So I set up my work table, took my pencil box and redrew the design on a sheet of A3 paper.

I started with the swirl of spearheads, because that is the main theme in this tatoo.
Then I added the koru shape below the shoulder which is overlapped a little to create a depth/dimension.
I really enjoy to create flowing lines, with a flawless curve.
Finally I added the right side of the tattoo and made some Samoan inspired patterns with triangles, fish shapes and overlapping strokes.

Once the sketch was finished I traced it with a black marker and scanned it.
Finally I added the shading of the different areas and retouched some small blemishes and spots in Photoshop.

Here's the final shoulder tattoo.

The original size is 29 x 21,5 cm (11 x 8,5 inches), but it can be scaled to adjust it to your arm/shoulder.

Price for this design is 41,65 euro (58 US dollar)

If you wish to order it, simply press the "Buy now" button and you will be redirected to the Paypal site for the payment.

Silver fern storm3d style tattoo

Hi there,

Another nice project today, a client asked me to draw a New Zealand/Maori silver fern in my own "storm3d" style.

The tattoo would be placed just below his arm to just above the hip, around 30 cm in height, quite a large tatoo.

First I made a sketch:

You can see a row of spearheads and some abstract leaves in a repetitive rythm.
I added a curve to the fern so it would flow nicely on the clients body.
The first sketch was approved, so I could trace the design with a marker, scan it and add some nice shadings to the leaves and arrowheads.
The high quality picture looks like this:

I'm working on a new design that will be for sale on this blog, a Maori inspired design with a touch of Samoan elements.
Tomorrow I will add some pictures and maybe I have finished it by that time.

Just check back soon!

Maori design on my powerkite

Hi,

As a hobby next to designing tattoos, I really like to fly powerkites. These kites have 4 lines, two for steering and two for braking.
I bought my first powerkite a year ago, a 4m2 Peter Lynn Twister, which has a really good lift.
This kite can lift me of the ground, sometimes even 2 meters in strong winds.

Some people create their own kites, so I would like to try that. First I started with a 1.7 square meters, small kite.
This really was a great experience, from printing the template panels (around 160 A4 sheets), sticking it together, cutting the panels (around 100 pieces in total) to sewing them together with my "new" Pfaff 1221 sewing machine:

This was the model I created in the program "Surfplan", which is ideal for creating your own foils and power kites.

Here are a few pictures of the process and the completed kite:

Finally I shot a movie of the process and it also shows the final kite in the air for its maiden flight:

maori design on a spinning wheel

Hi there,

A few months ago I made several tattoo designs for a spinning wheel. The designs where lasered in the wood. Today I received the photos of the wheel with the design on it.
It looks really nice, especially the round wheel with the spiral koru design.

Steampunk-like gears

Drawing those gears took me wayyyy to much time, huh. And they still look messy, but I guess it could be an inspiration for a steampunk themed tattoo.

Tattoo band wrapping around lower leg

Hi!

Another new tattoo project this week, a custom design for the lower leg.
My customer asked me if I could draw a band fully wrapping around his leg, just above the ankle, 15 cm in height.

When I receive the measurements, the first thing I do is making a template in Google Sketchup.
I need to get the right curvature of the design, so I creat two circles with the right circumference and make a cone shape in 3d. Then I unwrap it with the "unfold" plugin into a 2d surface.

The final template looks like this:

Finally I print it at the right size and start drawing.

The customer wanted a design inspired on another lower leg tattoo I did some time ago.

With pencil I made this first sketch with some koru curves and triangular tribal shapes.
The design was immediately approved by my client, so I could trace it, scan it and finalize it in Photoshop.

I messed up the glowing gemn and had to re-draw it digitally, meh. (So yes, the rest is just pen & pencil, as almost always).

Lower back tattoo in maori style

Hi!

I know it has been too long since my last post, but here are a few new sketches I have done for some customers. First a lower back tattoo for a British customer, who wanted a simple symmetrical design with some nice flowing lines, representing the waves and sea:

lower back maori tattoo sketch picturepencil sketch of a maori inspired back tatoo designThis first design was a bit too wide, so I had to narrow it a little.

In the upper part of the tattoo I created some stylized wave shapes.

The final tattoo looks like this:

Another one today, a butterfly in some very colorful style too.

Ornamental vines & flowers, rainbow color

To tell the truth, I have no idea if such a colorful design could look good as a tattoo or not.

Updates!

well lots happened in the last month...London Tattoo Convention, Made in Britain exhibition.....working and painting....photoshoots.....NEW TSHIRTS...more working and painting! i will be uploading bits in the next couple of days and set something up to buy tshirts online and new prints will also be available...they will be proper posh!

I just wanna take a minute to say thank you to all of you guys for supporting, for buying my tshirts, for coming back and getting more fun tattoos done and for showing always interest on what i'm doing.
In last couple of years i went through some pretty dark times finding myself to hate all about the industry. When i read 5 years ago Chris Cohnn myspace profile saying he quit tattooing because of it, i just couldnt believe it.
I went to my first convention when i was 15. I sacrificed a lot to do what i'm doing now and it all went ruined in such a short period of time that i was left with not even the time to understand what was happening. I'm a passionate person and i take everything at heart and doing so I found myself heartbroken. But in the last year i really changed a lot on my whole approach to tattooing and i became really private about it. I'm kinda trying to explain why i dont post things every night in either here or facebook or myspace or twitter or the next whatever! I just put a really small amount out there nowadays and everything became fun again!! It's too upsetting seeing people rapeing my designs or ideas or details and making money on top of it too!!

Enough blah blahs and here's some pics!
